Importance of Personality Types

The importance of how personality types help us make sense of human diversity — they offer a structured way to understand different ways of thinking, feeling, and interacting with the world. Their importance lies in several key areas:

  • Self-Discovery: They provide language to describe our tendencies, motivations, and challenges, helping us articulate who we are with more clarity
  • Personal Growth: Knowing your type can highlight areas for improvement whether it’s developing confidence, refining communication, or embracing flexibility
  • Interpersonal Relationships: Understanding personality differences fosters empathy, smoother collaboration, and deeper connections by acknowledging that people process life differently
  • Career Life Alignment: Certain personality traits thrive in specific environments, so knowing your type can help guide choices in work, creativity, and lifestyle
  • Cognitive Diversity: No single personality type is “better” than another – each contributes unique perspectives that, when embraced, create more inclusive and balanced communities

How Personality Types Help Us

The different personality types also help you know yourself better by looking through a structured lens through which we can understand ourselves more deeply. Personality typing helps in several key ways:

  • Self-Awareness: By identifying your cognitive patterns, strengths, and challenges, you gain clarity on how you process information, make decisions, and interact with the world
  • Personal Growth: Knowing your personality type allows for targeted self-improvement — whether it’s cultivating emotional intelligence, enhancing communication, or refining decision-making strategies
  • Emotional Validation: Understanding that your tendencies have a psychological basis can bring a sense of self-acceptance and help you embrace your nature rather than fight against it
  • Career and Creativity Alignment: When you recognize what drives your passions and productivity, you can build environments — both professional and personal — that amplify your strengths and minimize friction
  • Improved Relationships: Seeing differences in personalities through neutral, insightful framework makes it easier to navigate conflicts, empathize with others, and foster meaningful connections

MBTI Personality Types Basics

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality framework based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. It categorizes individuals into 16 personality types using four key dimensions:

  • Extraversion (E) | Introversion (I): How people direct their energy (outward toward the world vs. inward toward thoughts).
  • Sensing (S) | Intuition (N): How individuals process information (concrete facts vs. patterns and possibilities).
  • Thinking (T) | Feeling (F): How decisions are made (logic vs. values and emotions).
  • Judging (J) | Perceiving (P): How people approach structure (organization vs. flexibility).

In the MBTI framework, assertive and turbulent identities add depth to personality dynamics, influencing confidence, emotional resilience, stress management, and self-perception.

  • Assertive Types:
    • Maintain steady confidence in decisions and actions
    • Adapt well to challenges without excessive worry
    • Less prone to second-guessing or external validation
    • More relaxed in high-pressure environments
  • Turbulent Types:
    • Frequently re-evaluate choices for improvement
    • Experience heightened emotional reactions to setbacks
    • Strive for excellence but may struggle with self-doubt
    • More sensitive to feedback and external expectations

My MBTI Personality Type

My personality type (INFJ-T) helps me better understand some aspects of my personality. An INFJ-T (Turbulent Advocate) shares the core traits of an INFJ – Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging – but with a Turbulent identity, which influences how they handle stress, emotions, and self-perception. Here are some defining characteristics:

  • Idealistic but Cautious: While they have strong ideals, they may hesitate to take bold action due to self-doubt or fear of failure
  • Highly Self-Conscious: INFJ-Ts tend to be more sensitive to external opinions and may second-guess themselves more often than their Assertive counterparts
  • Perfectionist Tendencies: They set high standards for themselves and can be overly critical of their own work, striving for constant improvement
  • Sensitive to Stress: Unlike INFJ-As, who remain more composed under pressure, INFJ-Ts may experience heightened anxiety and emotional fluctuations
  • Deep Empathy: Their emotional sensitivity makes them incredibly attuned to others’ feelings, sometimes to the point of absorbing others’ stress
  • Driven by Growth: They are eager to improve themselves and their surroundings, often using their introspection to refine their personal and professional lives.

Turbulent Identity

The turbulent part of my personality type is an identifier with the following key aspects:

  • Heightened Self-Doubt: More likely to question themselves and their decisions compared to Assertive Advocates
  • Sensitive to Stress: Struggle with managing stress effectively, often feeling overwhelmed by challenges
  • Deep Empathy: Tend to absorb others’ emotions intensely, sometimes leading to hyper-empathy and emotional exhaustion
  • Perfectionist Tendencies: Hold themselves to high standards, which can result in excessive self-criticism
  • Pessimistic Outlook: More prone to seeing difficulties everywhere and exaggerating negative situations
  • Driven by Passion: Their emotional intensity fuels their motivation to help others and achieve meaningful goals
  • Struggle with Regret: More likely to dwell on past mistakes and perceived failures

Self-Discovery with My Type

Learning my MBTI type has helped me understand the qualities that I possess and how to better implement them in my life and give them purpose

Understanding my MBTI type has been a profound tool for self-discovery. It has given me a clearer lens through which to see my strengths, challenges, and inner motivations. Most importantly, it has illuminated the deep empathic qualities I possess – traits that shape the way I connect, create, and navigate the world.
